A native of northeastern Iowa, Althea Sherman was a self-taught ornithologist who was one of the first to document the somewhat secretive life of nesting Chimney Swifts by building a special observation tower at her home. The tower now stands at Bickett-Rate Memorial Preserve and still hosts nesting Chimney Swifts each year. Join us for a visit to this unique and historic attraction to see nesting Chimney Swifts up close! Bickett-Rate is also home to many other special birds in summer that we hope to see during our visit. Join us for this special experience! This trip is free but advance registration is required.
Iowa Young Birders welcomes everyone to the outdoors regardless of age, race, ethnicity, gender, orientation, religion, creed, national origin, or disability status. Our events can accommodate wheelchairs, vision and hearing impairments, and other health conditions. For questions, or to request accommodations for an upcoming event, please send us a message or email. As an IAYB event, this field trip is open to young birders and their parents/guardians/caretakers.
